Waiting for your oil life monitor to hit 0 before scheduling an oil change? That number is not your engine’s friend.
At Weber Automotive, we see the fallout from common oil change myths every week. I’m Brian Weber, and after years under the hood, I can tell you some of the “advice” that’s still circulating will quietly shorten your engine’s life. Here’s what drivers should know to keep modern engines running longer and smoother.
Engines and oils have evolved. Fuel injection burns cleaner than carburetors ever did, and that changed oil change intervals for good. Still, waiting for maximum mileage or relying on one-size-fits-all rules leads to sludge, timing component wear, and noisy cold starts.
Our simple approach: prioritize clean, properly flowing oil, change it a bit sooner than the maximum recommendation, and match viscosity to your engine and climate.
That was true in the carburetor era. Carbureted engines contaminated oil faster and wore out sooner. With fuel injection and improved synthetics, oil lasts longer.
The reality we see in the shop:
Our recommendation: aim for about 5,000 miles or change when your oil life monitor hits 20 to 30 percent, whichever comes first. Severe use may need shorter intervals.
Thicker isn’t automatically better. Heavy oil flows slowly when cold and delays oil pressure to critical parts during startup. Most engine wear happens right after you turn the key. If the oil is too thick for conditions, that wear gets worse.
What to use instead:
Not sure between 0W-20 and 5W-30 for your situation? Ask us. We’ll balance fuel economy, climate, and how you drive.
The oil life monitor estimates oil condition based on algorithms. It does not sense actual oil chemistry or see your exact driving extremes. Waiting until 0 percent pushes oil and filters to the limit.
Our guidance: change around 20 to 30 percent remaining. That margin reduces varnish buildup, protects timing components, and helps engines last.
We make maintenance decisions with you, not for you. The goal is simple: maximize engine longevity while keeping driving smooth and quiet.
If you want a quieter engine, fewer repairs, and peace of mind, we’re here to help. Contact Weber Automotive to schedule your oil change or a quick maintenance consultation. We’ll debunk the myths, choose the right oil for your vehicle, and set a schedule that keeps your engine healthy for the long haul.
