You grab your keys, head out the door, and your car is stone dead. Last week it was fine. This morning, nothing. Then, just to keep it interesting, it starts perfectly tomorrow. That is the classic electrical gremlin, and it is exactly the kind of mystery our team loves to solve at Weber Automotive.
Modern vehicles are rolling computers. When something electrical acts up, it can look like lights that flicker, warning lamps that come and go, accessories that work sometimes, or a battery going dead for no obvious reason. Intermittent issues are especially frustrating because they are hard to reproduce on command. You might only see the problem once a month, under who knows what conditions.
If a fault is constant, we can measure it immediately. When it shows up rarely, we have to be detectives. That is where our experience, process, and persistence matter. We gather every clue we can, even the ones that seem unrelated at first glance.
Those answers point us toward likely causes so we can reproduce the conditions and catch the fault in the act.
A customer came in with a battery that would mysteriously die about once a month. The battery tested great. Charging system was fine. So we started with questions. One detail stood out. Each dead-battery morning followed rain.
That told us to look for a water leak. We inspected the top of the windshield and found a tiny rust blister. With a careful water test, we watched water track down the inside of the dash, follow the A pillar, and pool under the floor. Right where the computer module lives.
We pulled the module and found corrosion. The unit had clearly gotten wet several times. A small flaw at the windshield was letting water in, which intermittently shorted the electronics. Fix the leak, address the corrosion and affected wiring, verify with repeated water testing, and the gremlin was gone.
Small chink, big problem. That is how electrical gremlins often work.
When you bring us an intermittent electrical problem, here is how we go after it:
Interview and documentation
We record symptoms, timing, weather, and any patterns you notice. Even a small detail can be the key.
Visual and environmental checks
We look for water intrusion, rust at the windshield, damp carpets, corroded connectors, or wiring chafes along the dash and A pillar.
System testing under real conditions
We recreate the scenario. If rain is a trigger, we perform controlled water testing. If heat or vibration is involved, we test for that too.
Battery and parasitic draw verification
We confirm battery health and look for intermittent draws that can drain a good battery overnight.
Module and harness inspection
We inspect computer modules and connectors for moisture, corrosion, or pin fit issues, then confirm repairs with repeat tests.
Mary, Brian, and our ASE-certified team keep the focus on root cause, not guesswork. We do not throw parts at a problem. We verify.
A few simple steps can speed up the diagnosis:
Bring that info to us, and we can zero in faster.
Electrical gremlins can be mysterious, but they are not magic. With the right questions, the right tests, and the patience to follow the clues, we find them.
