What is My Car Leaking?

If you've ever seen a puddle in your driveway before leaving for work in the morning, you might be pretty concerned that something is wrong – sometimes it is cause for concern, and other times that's just what happens. So, how can you tell when you should bring it in?

Identifying a Leak by Color

The fluids in your vehicle have different colors, and as cars get older, they tend to leak more than they did before. So, if you see these color fluids on the ground, this is what they generally indicate:

  • Gold/Brown
    • Engine oil
  • Black
    • Engine oil that is not being changed often enough
  • Red
    • Transition fluid
  • Orange/Green
    • Engine coolant/ antifreeze
  • Clear/Water
    • This usually indicates the AC is dripping water which is normal.

The moral of the story- If the color of the fluid under your car is any color other than clear (water), then you should have the vehicle inspected. Finding and repairing that leak will help keep your car running longer and stronger!
