What is a Steering System and Why is it Important?

Steering system in your car by Weber Automotive | North Olmsted, Ohio

What is a Steering System?

The steering system of your car is everything from the steering wheel to the steering shaft, rack and pinion (also known as the gearbox), all the way to the linkage which connects to the wheels themselves.

The Parts of The Steering & Suspension System

  • Ball Joints
  • Bushings
  • Sway Bar Links
  • Center Links
  • Idler Arms/Pitman Arms
  • Rack and Pinion Units
  • Tie Rod Ends/Sleeves
  • CV Joints/Boots
  • CV Axle Half Shafts
  • Shock Absorbers
  • Struts/Cartridges

Steering Assist Mechanism

Almost every single car has a steering assist mechanism; some are hydraulic with a reservoir for power steering fluid, while others use an electric assist. The electric power steering assist is more common these days, which is good because you don't need that fluid, and there is less maintenance needed.

What are Common Issues with a Steering System?

The most common issue you will see with a steering system is a linkage issue. The tie rod or rod end is that main linkage piece that helps you maneuver the vehicle. But when those tie rods wear down, it is harder to maintain proper alignment and eventually lose control of the steering.

If you are experiencing difficulty handling the steering in your car, it is important to get it checked out by a professional as soon as possible. It is dangerous for yourself and others on the road if you lose control of your vehicle due to a steering issue.

At Weber Automotive, you can schedule a service appointment online, and we can inspect and diagnose the issue. If you have any other questions, please contact us today.

One day, my dashboard started alarming me that my Hood was open. When I brought it to Weber, it had been looked at by another shop with less expertise in the field. Unfortunately, they disconnected a cable and Weber wasnt able to pop the hood open at all due to their mistake. Long story short, they tried to find a workaround for hours to get it open kept me informed the whole way. I was floored when they went above beyond to talk to a body shop that worked on my car after an accident back in July. They were able to find a way to open my hood and get the work covered under warranty. Suffice it to say I was so nervous about this whole ordeal, and Weber made things easy. They replaced my hood latch that included the broken sensor. Beyond that - they are actually continuing communications with the body shop to try get me a reimbursement through insurance. After investigating, they informed me this is probably a delayed result from my accident. What life savers! I am SO grateful to Weber
