All season tires were created for northern climates, like we have here in Northeast Ohio, so that they can be used in the heat of the summer, the wet roads in the spring, and on the icy and snowy roads in the wintertime.
All seasons tires do a pretty good job in the winter, but when you are driving in dangerous weather conditions such as ice and snow, 'okay' is not always good enough. That is why snow tires were created.
Snow tires are much better at handling in the winter as they are made of micropore rubber compounds, which increase the surface area and traction. The tread on snow tires is also designed to clear out water, snow, and slush. Snow tires also have sipes that provide extra traction.
We do not recommend using snow tires year-round because the material can get too soft and really wear out the tire. So ideally, you should have all season tires and swap them out for the winter months with the snow tires.
